What is proof?
Proof in mathematics means that a convincing demonstration has been carried out mathematically, using logical steps. Mathematical ideas are tested several times to see if they hold true in any situation, then a statement is made. The statement that is provided is often called a theorem.
In our case we are looking at the angles in a triangle. The theory is that the sum of the angles in a triangle equal 180°.
Some Year 6's decided to investigate and test the theory –
The enquiry questions were:
- Do all the angles of a triangle add up to 180 degrees no matter how you draw it? Can you write up your findings?
- Explain your methods (Say what and how you did it)
- How you arrived at your answers?
- Record your results as evidence to support your conclusions (What you found out)
- What conclusions can you draw from your results?
Here are useful links from the web to help you with your investigation report. Click on Exploring angles within a triangle and also scroll down and follow the links for the interative games. See below. (The video sounds a bit robotic! However it is interesting kids!)
