Great Math Sites to support your learning in Class!

Here is a fantastic website for you to try some challenging mathematical activities.  They will help you to continue your learning kids! Use them and report back to the teacher about how you found the activities. Try to consolidate your learning by trying a few of the challenges, try the Stage 1 and 2 Challenges first.

There are many more challenges about shape that you can try...

Year 6 Explore angles and Investigate Triangles...

What is proof?

Proof in mathematics means that a convincing demonstration has been carried out mathematically, using logical steps. Mathematical ideas are tested several times to see if they hold true in any situation, then a statement is made. The statement that is provided is often called a theorem.

In our case we are looking at the angles in a triangle. The theory is that the sum of the angles in a triangle equal 180°.

Some Year 6's decided to investigate and test the theory –

The enquiry questions were:

  • Do all the angles of a triangle add up to 180 degrees no matter how you draw it? Can you write up your findings?
  • Explain your methods (Say what and how you did it)
  • How you arrived at your answers?
  • Record your results as evidence to support your conclusions (What you found out)
  • What conclusions can you draw from your results?
Here are useful links from the web to help you with your investigation report.  Click on Exploring angles within a triangle and also scroll down and follow the links for the interative games.  See below. (The video sounds a bit robotic! However it is interesting kids!)

So year 6   Did you take on the challenge and explore? What did you find out?  Let me know leave your comments...

Hey try out these Triangle Teasers. How many can you see?

Year 6 Watch the Worm Collector

At the end of last month Year 6 watch the play the Worm Collector and then took part in some learning workshops to explore the play.  It was really interesting.  Here is a short film of our morning...

Year 6 Begin Planning for the Great Garden Clean up

During September Year 6 went into the garden to explore the possible wildlife that lives out there. In science we are learning about Interdependence and Adaptation - This means we are findng out about the characteristics of living things, how they are dependent on one another and how they are adapted to the environment that they live in.

The kids search for signs of tadpole life

Here are some exciting research sites that we have looked at to help us with our studies, BBC Wildlife Finder is really interesting with videoclips of all kinds of different animals seen in their natural habitats.

Year 6 have been thinking about how they can make our school garden more exciting.  They are currently planning to clean it up and prepare it for the winter months.  Every Monday afternoon we have a variety of activities going on one of those activities is garden clean up.  Mrs Gray takes two small groups a week and supervises the activity.  We saw Miss Wallace the other week who gave us some great ideas and plans.

This year it would be nice to have more success with the strawberry patch, the birds enjoyed it but we didn't get a look in!

We have learnt about Personification

The children learnt how to use personification in their writing and performed their poems to each other in talking partners.  We used the theme of Natural Disasters and gave Volcanoes and Earthquakes human characteristics in our poems...  The class helped to write two poems together and then worked in talking partners to write their own...

The sun tried to peep over my shoulder as it crept inside the door, enticing me to come out to play!!

All the children worked really hard to produce some exciting work...

Well done Year 6

Hello! What else did Year 6 do during their first month?

Some of us have been celebrating!!

Khadija told the class about Eid..

Eid ul Fitr is a big celebration that Muslims celebrate all over the world and it marks the end of Ramadan.
Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic calendar and is a time when Muslims fast (do not eat). It is intended to help teach Muslims self-discipline, self-restraint and generosity and it also reminds them of the suffering of the poor, who may rarely get to eat well.
We asked Khadija questions.  It was really interesting.

She also showed us her Henna hand designs

Henna (which is also known as Mehndi) is an ancient Body Art. It is used in creating intricate ethnic or contemporary designs and patterns.  Henna designs are traditionally put on the hands and feet of women for special ceremonies.

We looked on the internet to find out more about the designs
Have a look

They are beautiful...
